Synopsis

The King's Buccaneer is the second book of Krondor's Sons, following Nicholas, the youngest son of Prince Arutha, as he trains as a squire under his uncle Martin at Crydee on the Far Coast. When Durbin slavers and pirates from the Sunset Islands raid the coast and carry off a number of the castle's young people, including Nicholas's cousin Margaret and the woman both Nicholas and his cousin Marcus have feelings for, Nicholas assembles a crew, including the pirate survivor Admiral Trask, to pursue the raiders across unfamiliar waters. The mage Pug later joins the effort, having recognized that the kidnappings conceal a far graver plot: the serpent-like Pantathians intend to seed the Kingdom with disguised duplicates of its people as the opening move of a plague meant to devastate the realm, forcing Nicholas's rescue mission to become a race against a hidden enemy.

Notes

  • A planned third book, 'The Return of the Buccaneer', was never written.
  • From the series record (Krondor's Sons): Distinct from, and not to be confused with, The Riftwar Legacy (the Krondor game novelizations).

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
