Synopsis

Magician's End brings the Chaoswar Saga, and the Riftwar Cycle as a whole, to its final volume, centered on what has become known as the Dread invasion threatening Midkemia. Pug, the magician whose long life has spanned the entire cycle, faces a desperate choice involving the mountains surrounding the city of E'Bar as the forces he has spent decades opposing converge on the world he has sworn to protect. Drawing together characters and threads from across the preceding sagas, from the Conclave of Shadows to the Chaoswar itself, the novel follows the final campaign against the accumulated dangers unleashed over the course of the series, set against a landscape already scarred by earlier magical conflicts, including the Sunken Lands.

Where it sits

Notes

  • Final novel of the Riftwar Cycle. Its ISBN was re-verified in a targeted Round 3 check (2026-08-10) directly against ISFDB title record #1576345 -- 978-0-00-726479-7, Harper Voyager (UK) hc, 2013-05-06 -- and confirmed correct. The Round 2 suspicion (that this ISBN was a copy-paste error, identical to another Riftwar Cycle book's ISBN) was mistaken about which book was actually wrong: the real source of the collision was a bad ISBN on A Crown Imperiled (see its own notes), not this book.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Chaoswar Saga: position 3 of 3: previous A Crown Imperiled (2012)
  • Internal chronology, within Riftwar Cycle: position 30 of 30: previous A Crown Imperiled (2012)
