Synopsis
This novel follows young Squire James of Krondor as he investigates a wave of mysterious murders unsettling the city, while rival criminal factions jockey for power beneath the surface. The arrival of foreign nobles, including the Crown Prince of Roldem and the Duke of Olasko, adds diplomatic tension to an already volatile situation. William, son of the great magician Pug, joins James in piecing together a conspiracy tied to the assassin cult of the Nighthawks and dark, forbidden magic. Working alongside Prince Arutha's forces, the pair race to prevent further assassinations and unravel the criminal network endangering the kingdom, all while trying to determine who is truly directing the chaos from behind the scenes. The book continues the Riftwar Legacy's blend of court intrigue, street-level crime, and magical threat.
