Synopsis
Set in the Kingdom of the Isles, this novel opens as Gorath, a moredhel (dark elf) noble, defects from his own people to warn the kingdom of a deadly threat: the assassin cult of the Nighthawks has resumed its killings, and a secret cabal of six renegade magicians is orchestrating a wider conspiracy. Squires James and Locklear are tasked with helping defend Krondor against a feared renewed moredhel invasion, while Gorath allies with an inexperienced young magician named Owyn to trace the conspiracy to its source. Complicating matters, a shadowy criminal figure known only as the Crawler is destabilizing the city's underworld through smuggling operations tied to Tsurani gems, adding a further layer of danger and intrigue as the different threads of political, magical, and criminal menace begin to converge on Krondor.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
