Synopsis

A Kingdom Besieged opens the Chaoswar Saga, the concluding trilogy of the Riftwar Cycle, as the Kingdom's spies operating in the Empire of Great Kesh begin disappearing and the intelligencer Jim Dasher uncovers signs of a massive military mobilization within the Keshian Confederacy. As western nobles muster their forces for a war they can see coming, Martin conDoin is left to hold Crydee Keep with only old men and boys against the vanguard of an invading army, while Jim Dasher works to understand how Kesh secretly prepared what may be the largest colonization effort in its history. A new generation of characters, including Hal, Brendan and Martin, sons of the Conclave's earlier agent Talwin Hawkins, steps into roles that echo the struggles of the heroes who came before them, even as a demon called Child matures with her own designs on returning to Midkemia.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
