Synopsis

Neveryóna, or: The Tale of Signs and Cities follows Pryn, a fifteen-year-old girl whose ability to read and write marks her as unusual in her world, as she leaves her home and travels through Nevèrÿon's varied social strata, from the wealthy suburb that gives the novel its title, near the port city of Kolhari, to poorer towns such as Enoch and working-class settlements beyond them. Descended, according to local legend, from a woman said to have invented the loom and spindle without receiving credit for it, Pryn becomes caught up in the political ferment surrounding Gorgik the Liberator's campaign against slavery, encountering wealthy conservatives and merchant patrons who quietly finance resistance to his movement as well as ordinary people affected by the changing economic order.
