Synopsis
The second Tale of Witness by Steven Erikson is set about a decade after the main events of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, in the city of G'danisban. As religious cults tied to the goddess Va'Shaik grow increasingly restless and confrontational under continued Malazan rule, High Fist Jalan Arenfall is left to maintain order in the volatile city with only a small contingent of marines at his disposal, a badly undermanned force facing a crisis that threatens to spiral well beyond the garrison's ability to contain it alone, testing what remains of Malazan authority in a city that has never fully accepted imperial rule.
