Synopsis
The first novel in Steven Erikson's Tales of Witness trilogy is set roughly a decade after the events of The Crippled God, in the Silver Lake region of northern Genabackis. There, old tensions between colonial settlers and the native Teblor tribes -- a legacy of history tied to Karsa Orlong -- have never fully cooled. The arrival of a Malazan marine company under Lieutenant Pores unsettles this fragile peace further, drawing the small garrison into the mounting unrest between settlers and Teblor as ancient grievances and stirring powers threaten to reignite old conflicts. Rather than a full-scale war, the novel follows this company-level presence as it becomes entangled in a regional crisis whose roots reach back into the Teblor's own history and beliefs.
