Synopsis

Calen Bryer is a young man in the remote southern village of Milltown, in the war-torn realm of Epheria, still grieving his brother's death as he prepares for a dangerous rite of passage known as the Proving, a test of courage and combat expected of every young villager. His life changes when three mysterious strangers arrive carrying a closely guarded secret, drawing him into a centuries-old conflict between the region's southern High Lords, whose rivalries and distrust have long fractured the land, and the Dragonguard, an elite military force serving the northern empire that keeps the High Lords in check. As Calen is pulled from his sheltered village life into events far larger than himself, he begins to grasp how deeply the strangers' arrival has already changed his future, with no prophecy or foretold destiny to soften the danger ahead.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Bound and the Broken): Self-published epic fantasy main sequence, planned for 5 novels. The fifth and concluding volume, Of Gods and Ashes, is announced for 2028 per the author's own 2025 year-end update and is correctly excluded as unpublished. Several companion novellas (The Fall, The Exile, The Ice, and others) exist in the same continuity but were not catalogued.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Bound and the Broken: position 1 of 4: next Of Darkness and Light (2021)
