Synopsis

Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders is a novella in Aliette de Bodard's Dominion of the Fallen setting, following married couple Thuan, a dragon prince, and Asmodeus, a formidable Fallen angel, during Lunar New Year celebrations. Their festivities are interrupted when they discover a corpse just outside their quarters, and while Asmodeus throws himself eagerly into investigating the murder, Thuan finds himself reluctantly pulled back into the political intrigue he had hoped to leave behind. As the pair dig into the crime, they must draw on their very different strengths, Asmodeus's skill with blades and ruthlessness against Thuan's diplomacy and patience, while also navigating the ordinary friction of their own relationship. Set in a Vietnamese-inspired, gothic version of Paris, the story mixes murder-mystery plotting with the couple's sharp, affectionate banter.

Notes

  • From the series record (Dragons and Blades): Two novellas set in the same Paris/dragon-kingdom setting, following secondary characters (Thuan and Asmodeus) -- side-story length, not the primary reading unit for this universe, per the Rivers of London precedent (main-sequence novels Core, side novellas Expanded).

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
