Synopsis
Julie Katz is the daughter of God, conceived in Atlantic City through a sperm bank donation made by her human father, Murray Katz, a Jewish hermit. Growing up with powers she barely understands, she becomes a messiah of a very modern kind. Satan schemes to turn her gifts to his own ends, fundamentalists track her across the country, and her divine mother never speaks to her. Julie tries to understand why people suffer and how to answer that suffering. The novel is a satirical counter-theodicy that sets a young woman's search for purpose against the machinery of faith, commerce and politics in late twentieth-century America.
