Synopsis
About twelve years after the earlier tales, King Athelgar rules Chivial. Sir Beaumont, one of the realm's finest Blades, is bound to the aging Lord Wassail. Wassail must escort a royal princess out of the court of Czar Igor, a treacherous and unstable ruler, and deliver her to the king as a bride. Beaumont and his fellow Blades Arkell and Oak guide the party along a narrow route to keep Wassail safe. Meanwhile Igor wants a Blade of his own and seeks the rituals needed to make one, using ensorcelled dogs and the murderous strelsy. Beaumont, disgraced and out of favor, must also stop a missing Blade before it reaches the czar's court.
