Synopsis
Yelena, a young prisoner awaiting execution for killing the man who abused her, is offered a reprieve by Valek, the security chief and assassin for the Commander of Ixia: she must become the Commander's food taster, risking death by poison every day. Complicating matters, Yelena is hiding a lethal secret of her own -- an uncontrollable magical power that could get her killed if discovered, since magic is outlawed under the Commander's rule and those found practicing it are put to death. As Yelena works to master her ability in secret and survive the constant threat of poison in her new role, she is drawn into palace intrigue that threatens to expose both her magic and the fragile trust she has built with Valek.
