Synopsis
Rivers of London, published in the United States as Midnight Riot, opens the Peter Grant series with its title character, a probationary constable in London's Metropolitan Police, witnessing a ghost while guarding a crime scene. The encounter draws him into a small, secretive branch of the police that deals with magic, and he becomes the first person in decades to be formally apprenticed as a wizard, training under the enigmatic Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale. Grant is soon juggling two connected problems: a spate of ordinary Londoners suddenly committing shocking, out-of-character acts of violence, and a brewing conflict between rival deities of the River Thames who each claim authority over the city's waterways.
