Synopsis

Sandry's Book, the first novel in the Circle of Magic quartet, is set in the fictional land of Emelan. After a plague kills her parents, ten-year-old noblewoman Sandrilene fa Toren, known as Sandry, is rescued from quarantine by the mage Niklaren Goldeye. He brings her to Discipline Cottage at Winding Circle temple, where she is thrown together with three other unwanted children: Tris, a girl exiled by her own family; Daja, the sole survivor of a Trader ship's wreck; and Briar, a reformed street thief. Each of the four has an unconventional magical gift that untrained adult mages have failed to recognize or control, and traditional lessons only make their powers more unstable and dangerous.

  • Internal chronology, within Circle of Magic (Emelan): position 1 of 11: next Tris's Book (1998)
