Synopsis

Shadow and Bone, the first book in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha trilogy, opens with Alina Starkov, an orphaned soldier in the war-ravaged kingdom of Ravka, crossing the Shadow Fold, an unnatural band of darkness infested with flesh-eating monsters. When her regiment's skiff is attacked, Alina unleashes a dormant power she never knew she had, revealing herself as a Sun Summoner capable of channeling light. The discovery pulls her away from her childhood friend Mal and into the ranks of the Grisha, Ravka's magical military elite, where she comes under the tutelage of their charismatic and powerful leader, the Darkling, who believes her gift may be strong enough to destroy the Fold and reunite the country.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Shadow and Bone Trilogy: position 1 of 3: next Siege and Storm (2013)
  • Internal chronology, within The Grishaverse: position 1 of 7: next Six of Crows (2015)
