Synopsis
Shadow of Night (2012) is the second novel in Deborah Harkness's All Souls Trilogy, continuing directly from the events of the first book. Historian-turned-witch Diana Bishop and centuries-old vampire Matthew Clairmont use timewalking to travel back to sixteenth-century London, seeking a tutor who can help Diana control her awakening magical abilities and safe distance from enemies pursuing them in the present. There they move among the School of Night, a circle of scholars, spies, and freethinkers linked to Matthew's own past, while continuing their search for clues to the whereabouts of Ashmole 782, the palimpsest manuscript with mysterious writing hidden beneath a spell. Navigating Elizabethan court politics, espionage, and the complications of Matthew's old acquaintances and rivalries, the couple work to protect themselves and unravel the manuscript's origins before returning to their own time.
