Synopsis

Shadowfell opens with sixteen-year-old Neryn on the run across the oppressive land of Alban, where King Keldec hunts down anyone suspected of possessing the banned magical gifts of the Good Folk. Having recently lost her family, Neryn travels alone and wary, hiding her own rare ability to see and communicate with the fae, while trying to reach Shadowfell, a hidden refuge said to shelter rebels working to overthrow the king. Along her journey she is joined by a skilled and guarded guide named Flint, whose true loyalties are not immediately clear, and by various Good Folk who test and aid her in turn. Rather than relying on combat, Neryn's path forward depends on her ability to observe, listen and earn trust, qualities that gradually transform her from a frightened fugitive into an active participant in the growing resistance against Keldec's corrupted rule.

Notes

  • From the series record (Shadowfell): A YA trilogy set in a wholly invented kingdom (Alban) distinct from the pseudo-historical Ireland/Scotland settings of Marillier's other admitted universes -- no shared world or characters with Sevenwaters, Blackthorn & Grim, the Bridei Chronicles, or Saga of the Light Isles.
