Overview

Shadowfell is Juliet Marillier's young-adult fantasy trilogy, published by Knopf and Pan Macmillan between 2012 and 2014, set in the wholly invented kingdom of Alban under a tyrant's rule. It follows young Neryn, who flees across a landscape patrolled by the king's soldiers and Enforcers in search of the last hidden practitioners of the Guardians' old magic, hoping to help topple the regime that has suppressed both magic and dissent. Shadowfell (2012), Raven Flight (2013), and The Caller (2014) trace her growing role in a resistance movement built around Alban's remaining Guardians and folk traditions, in a setting drawing on Scottish and Celtic-inflected landscape and myth typical of Marillier's fiction. The trilogy extended Marillier's reputation, built chiefly on adult historical fantasy such as the Sevenwaters novels, into young-adult publishing, and was well received by critics for its atmosphere and folkloric grounding.
