Synopsis
Set during the Gurlish Wars, this short story in the Powder Mage Universe follows a young Sergeant Tamas, an ambitious commoner and powder mage serving in the Adran army well before the events of the main trilogy. Tamas struggles against the prejudice of a military hierarchy that looks down on his low birth even as it depends on his magical talents, and chafes at the limits placed on soldiers of his rank. When the army's command considers abandoning a long and costly siege of the fortress of Tilpur, Tamas sees a chance to prove himself by breaking the enemy's defenses through his own initiative and power. The story follows his attempt to force a victory that could change both the course of the siege and his own standing, even as the odds against him remain steep.
