Synopsis
Set in Newford, this novel follows Lily, a photojournalist chasing rumors of strange 'animal people' said to live among the city's slums, and Hank, a streetwise cab driver who knows that world firsthand. A violent encounter throws the two together and pulls them into a hidden conflict centered on the First People -- ancient, shapeshifting beings rooted in Native American myth, among them Raven, Coyote, and other animal-form figures who have quietly inhabited the world since its creation. Lily and Hank find themselves drawn into a struggle over the city's soul, where ordinary appearances conceal older, stranger loyalties and nothing is quite what it seems. The book weaves corvid and trickster mythology through a contemporary urban setting, exploring how these ancient inhabitants shape the fates of the humans who share their city.
