Synopsis

Somewhere Beyond the Sea continues the Cerulean Chronicles, following Arthur Parnassus and his partner Linus Baker as they run their orphanage for magical children on Marsyas Island, caring for six young residents with unusual abilities while hoping to welcome a seventh, a young yeti named David, into their family. Their life is disrupted when Arthur is invited to testify at a governmental hearing on the treatment of magical youth, only for the hearing to turn into an attack on his character. Jeanine Rowder, the newly appointed head of the government agency overseeing magical children, accuses Arthur of building his own private army out of the children in his care and opens an investigation. As Arthur and Linus return home with David, they face mounting pressure from an inspector sent to assess the household, setting up a confrontation between their family and the authorities determined to dismantle it.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Cerulean Chronicles): Publisher/rating-platform-labelled 'Cerulean Chronicles' -- a whimsical contemporary-set fantasy about an orphanage for magical children. Open-ended: no confirmation found that Klune considers the series permanently closed at 2 books, so registered as 'sequence' rather than 'duology'.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
