Travis John Klune was born on May 20, 1982, in Roseburg, Oregon, and began writing fiction as a child, starting with fan fiction inspired by the video game Metroid before moving on to original stories. He writes under the pen name TJ Klune, a convention common among authors of gay romance fiction, and has spoken publicly about being asexual and queer, identities that shape his fiction's focus on inclusive families and marginalized characters. His novels span fantasy and romance, including the Green Creek werewolf series and The Extraordinaries superhero series, and he is best known for The House in the Cerulean Sea (2020), a novel about a found family of magical children that reached the New York Times fiction list and was named one of the year's best feel-good reads by the Washington Post. He won a Lambda Literary Award for Gay Romance in 2014 for Into This River I Drown, the Alex Award in 2021, and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature in 2021.
