Synopsis
Sorcerer to the Crown, published by Zen Cho in 2015, opens the Sorcerer Royal series with a historical fantasy set in an alternate Regency-era London where England's magic is visibly and worryingly fading. Zacharias Wythe, the country's first African-born Sorcerer Royal, has inherited the position under a cloud of suspicion, widely believed by his peers to have obtained it through foul means rather than merit. As he struggles to lead the Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers and reverse the drain of English magic, a faction within the Society actively schemes to unseat him. His path crosses with Prunella Gentleman, a sharp, resourceful young woman with untrained magical talent far beyond what English society believes a woman, let alone one of her background, should possess, and the two are drawn together as Zacharias's authority and England's magical fortunes both hang in the balance.

Notes
- From the series record (The Sorcerer Royal): A completed duology (confirmed via the author's own site, despite some retail listings mislabeling it a 'trilogy') -- Regency-era historical fantasy centering a freed-slave sorcerer and a Malaysian orphan sorceress, by a Malaysian-British author. Sorcerer to the Crown won the 2016 British Fantasy Award's Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer and was a 2016 Locus Award for Best First Novel finalist; no award record found for The True Queen in the sources checked.
