Synopsis
"Spinning Silver" began as a short story by Naomi Novik, published in the 2016 anthology The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales, before she expanded it into a full novel. Loosely based on the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale, it is set in a fictional medieval Eastern European kingdom and centers on a moneylender's daughter with an uncanny reputation for turning silver into gold.
Where it sits
- Universe: Spinning Silver
- Series: not part of a registered series (standalone work within its universe)
- Author: Naomi Novik
Notes
- Precursor short story published in the anthology The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales (ed. Parisien & Wolfe, Saga Press, 2016), later substantially expanded into the 2018 novel. Registered separately because it is a collected, independently citable/awardable text (own venue, own publication date) that predates the novel, distinct from the uncollected-shorts convention, which withholds registration until collection; this one is already collected.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within Spinning Silver (standalone work): position 1 of 2: next Spinning Silver (2018)
