Synopsis

Slither is not human. He comes from a place beyond the County, drinks blood to live, and has learned to survive by staying out of sight. The story is told from his own point of view as he enters the County and makes an uneasy agreement with a farmer. Under that agreement he comes to care for two girls and takes on the task of protecting them. Dangerous people are searching for them, and the world around Slither is moving toward a larger conflict he only partly understands. On the road he meets Nessa and sometimes crosses paths with Grimalkin, and he starts to learn what it means to belong somewhere and to be loyal to someone.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Wardstone Chronicles): Thirteen novels following Tom Ward, apprentice to the County's spook, from 2004 to 2013.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
