Synopsis
Storm Front opens The Dresden Files, introducing Harry Dresden, "Chicago's only professional wizard," who advertises his services openly and takes cases from the public. Dresden is already living under a cloud, having once killed his own mentor in self-defense using magic, a violation of the wizards' Laws that leaves him watched by a Warden for any excuse to carry out a death sentence. The story begins when Dresden takes two cases at once, a request from Monica Sells over her husband's erratic behavior, and a summons from detective Karrin Murphy to consult on a double murder in which the victims' hearts were destroyed by magic. As Dresden investigates, suspicion for the killings falls on him, and his inquiries pull him into contact with Chicago's criminal underworld, including crime boss Johnny Marcone, while he tries to find the real culprit before the Council moves against him.

- From the series record (The Dresden Files): 18-novel main sequence (2000-2026, ongoing), narrated throughout by wizard-detective Harry Dresden. Publication order equals in-story chronological order for the entire main sequence. Peace Talks and Battle Ground (both 2020) were originally written as a single novel that grew too long and was split into two by the publisher, released 2.5 months apart, a genuine bibliographic quirk, not a numbering error. A 19th novel (Mirror Mirror) is announced for 2027 but unpublished and is not registered.
