Synopsis
Sworn to track down the hounds of hoolies, the beasts loosed by the sorcery of the North, and haunted by his memories of Del, Tiger, now master of Northern as well as Southron sword skills and carrying a Northern-made jivatma he does not know how to control, follows the trail that leads toward Ysaa-den, the village the hounds have been ravaging. The third novel of the saga, told like the others in Tiger's voice, carries him from the mountains back toward the desert and his old life, and brings Del back to him changed by what the Place of Swords cost her. Readers have noted that its three parts pick up exactly where Sword-Singer broke off, the two books forming one continuous story of the sword, the song and the price of making a blade that drinks souls.

Notes
- From the series record (Tiger and Del): Jennifer Roberson's Sword-Dancer saga (1986-), told in the sardonic voice of Tiger, the Sandtiger, a Southron sword-dancer, and following his partnership with Del, a Northern sword-singer: duels in the ritual circle, souls bound into blades, and the long question of Tiger's origins. Six novels published 1986-2002 as a complete arc, then two more (2013, 2022) with a ninth mentioned.
