Synopsis

Teckla finds Vlad Taltos settled into married life with Cawti, only to see that stability threatened when Cawti becomes drawn into a movement of social revolutionaries operating in South Adrilankha, led by a Teckla organizer named Kelly. Vlad, still working as a Jhereg enforcer, watches his wife's idealism pull her further from the pragmatic, transactional world he inhabits. When one of the revolutionaries is murdered, Vlad investigates and traces the killing to Herth, a Jhereg crime boss determined to crush the dissident group by force. As Herth's campaign against the movement escalates toward open violence, Vlad is caught between his loyalty to the organization that has always protected him and his need to keep Cawti safe, forcing him to weigh whether their fundamentally different views of the world, and of what is worth fighting for, can survive the widening conflict between organized crime and political revolution.

  • From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
