Synopsis
Ellen Pierson is a teenager in upstate New York when her cousin Paul unknowingly becomes involved with a Malignant One, a dangerous spirit. Ellen persuades her family to seek help from Alison Birkett, a famous lawyer who handles cases of demonic possession, and the two try to drive the spirit away. Years later Ellen is in her twenties and disillusioned, working beside Alison again. They look into Alexander Timmerman, a Teller backed by the Benign Ones who is trying to expose corruption in the government. The case begins to tie back to what happened to Paul. The story is told in Ellen's own voice and also follows her feelings for Alison, in the same alternate America shaped by its spiritual revolution.
