Synopsis
Eighty-seven years after a second American Revolution, shamans known as the Founders are venerated and miracles are routine. A bureaucratic Spiritual Development Agency tracks them, and storytellers called Tellers are respected figures. In Poughkeepsie, recently divorced Jennifer Mazdan wakes from a dream to find she is pregnant, and learns she is meant to be the mother of a new messiah. She wants no part of it and tries to end the pregnancy, but an unseen force stops her. She goes to Manhattan to find her husband, meets a holy ice cream vendor and other odd figures along the way, and fights to keep control of her own life against the destiny others have planned.
