Synopsis
Terrier opens the Beka Cooper trilogy, set roughly two centuries before Alanna's era, and follows sixteen-year-old Rebakah "Beka" Cooper as she begins her first year training to become a Provost's Dog, one of the officers who police the city of Corus's roughest district, the Lower City. Assigned as a Puppy under two veteran Dogs, Clary Goodwin and Mattes Tunstall, Beka relies on an unusual magical gift, the ability to hear the voices of ghosts riding on pigeons and to overhear conversations carried by whirling dust spinners in the streets. Guided by her strong sense of justice and aided by her scent-hound instincts and her cat Pounce, Beka uses these powers to help her partners investigate two dangerous threats facing the Lower City at once, a kidnapper posing as the legendary Shadow Snake and a violent operation hunting for rare fire opals.
