Synopsis

Marjorie Burke is a graduate student whose work has stalled and who has barely spoken to her younger sister Holly since Holly became Orthodox Jewish, married and fell pregnant. When their grandfather Eli dies, Marjorie finds a notebook of the frightening stories he told the girls as children, about a wizard-like figure called the White Rebbe and an angel who keeps a ledger of losses. The notebook is one of several, and she sets out to find the others to learn who her grandfather really was. Her search runs through Jewish folklore, the legend of the Wandering Jew and her own research, and it leads back to his life in wartime Europe. Marjorie must also decide what she owes her sister.
