Synopsis
The Ascent to Godhood, published by JY Yang in 2019, is the fourth Tensorate novella. The story opens with the death of the Protector, the powerful ruler who has shaped the nation for fifty years, and is narrated by Lady Han, once the Protector's closest companion and later her greatest enemy. Responding to an unnamed interviewer's questions, Han looks back across decades to when the future Protector, then a young woman not yet crowned, first fell into a dangerous love with Han, at the time an entertainer who had been sold first into slavery and then to a house catering to the wealthy. Told in second person as a long, unsparing confession, the novella traces how affection, ambition, and betrayal became entangled in the years before the Protector rose to power, reframing events from earlier books in the series through Han's private memory.
