Synopsis

The Descent of Monsters, published by JY Yang in 2018, is the third Tensorate novella, told as an investigative dossier compiled by Chuwan Sariman, an officer of the ruling Protectorate. Sariman is assigned to produce an official report explaining a catastrophic incident at the Rewar Tang Institute, a research facility where an experimental, weaponized hybrid creature escaped confinement and killed the entire staff. As she gathers journal entries, redacted transcripts, and correspondence to reconstruct events, Sariman finds her access to key records deliberately restricted, and gradually realizes her superiors intend her report to manufacture a false, convenient account of the disaster rather than the truth. Refusing to comply, she abandons her assigned role and joins forces with Cai Yuan-ning, whose sister died in the massacre, to dig out what actually happened at the institute and why.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Tensorate Series): A completed 4-novella silkpunk sequence by a Singaporean author, set in a wuxia-inspired secondary world; each volume can be read largely independently, following different members of the same royal family across a shared timeline.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
