Synopsis

The Red Threads of Fortune, published by JY Yang in 2017, is the second Tensorate novella, centering on Sanao Mokoya some years after the events of the first book. Once a celebrated prophet, Mokoya has lost her gift of foresight following the death of her daughter Eien, and has since separated from her husband and retreated from court life to make her living hunting naga in the wilderness. When an unusually large naga attacks the Machinist stronghold of Bataanar, Mokoya is drawn into investigating the creature and discovers it possesses slackcraft, a magical ability normally unique to humans. Her search for an explanation uncovers uncomfortable truths connected to her own past even as the political tensions between the Protectorate and the rebel Machinists continue to escalate around her, forcing Mokoya to confront both an external threat and grief she has never fully faced.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Tensorate Series): A completed 4-novella silkpunk sequence by a Singaporean author, set in a wuxia-inspired secondary world; each volume can be read largely independently, following different members of the same royal family across a shared timeline.
