Synopsis

The Battle of Nospherus, published by Kaoru Kurimoto in 1980, is the third Guin Saga novel translated into English. Guin, the warrior whose face remains fixed permanently behind a leopard's mask he cannot remove, leads his small band of companions, including the exiled royal twins, a simian-girl, and a seasoned mercenary, across the treacherous River Kes and into the desolate badlands known as Nospherus. The group must survive the region's harsh terrain even as a Mongauli army numbering some fifteen thousand soldiers, commanded by the formidable and dangerous General Amnelis, pursues them relentlessly across the wilderness. Cut off from easy shelter or reinforcement, Guin's party is forced to rely on his mysterious combat instincts and whatever alliances they can forge with Nospherus's own inhabitants simply to stay ahead of the army closing in behind them.

Where it sits

  • Universe: Guin Saga
  • Series: The Guin Saga (English-translated volumes) core; position 4 of 4 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Kaoru Kurimoto

Notes

  • From the series record (The Guin Saga (English-translated volumes)): The four confirmed English-translated volumes of Kaoru Kurimoto's Japanese-language Guin Saga (Vertical Inc., translated by Alexander O. Smith). A fifth title once catalogued here ('The Wind Sword's Shadow') was removed as unresolvable after thorough research found no matching real Guin Saga volume, English or Japanese. The full Japanese-language saga (130 volumes by Kurimoto herself before her 2009 death, plus further volumes by other authors) runs far beyond this Core Canon; the untranslated remainder is a documented future research lead, not part of this admission.
