Synopsis
In a kingdom at war, where girls are forbidden to read, a feverish girl is found in the barn of a monastery, the Order of the Chronicles of Sorrowing. Brother Edik nurses her back to health and learns that she is Beatryce, that she can read and write, and that she is the girl of an old prophecy that says a girl child will unseat a king. The king is hunting for her, so the monks send her away, with a fierce goat named Answelica at her side. Beatryce, who loves stories, makes her way through a dark wood toward the king's castle. Along the way she meets people who each carry a painful past and who help her. Black-and-white illustrations by Sophie Blackall accompany the text.
