Synopsis
When the last MacDevon dies, Castle Keep, a small ruined castle on an island in Loch Linnhe in the Scottish Highlands, passes to a distant relative in Toronto, Robert Volnik, who brings his family across to see it. His children Emily and Jessup explore the old place and carry home a few of its treasures, among them an antique rolltop desk, not knowing that something has been asleep in the desk: the Boggart, an ancient, invisible, shape-shifting spirit of mischief who has lived with the MacDevons for centuries, playing tricks for the pleasure of it and never meaning harm. Transplanted to a modern city of traffic, electricity and computers, the Boggart's pranks grow out of control, and the children, who alone come to understand what is happening in their house, must find a way to send him home. Cooper's first comic novel, published between her Dark Is Rising sequence and King of Shadows.
