Synopsis
The Book of Lost Tales: Part One, published in 1983 as the first volume of The History of Middle-earth, is edited by Christopher Tolkien and collects the earliest (begun 1917) versions of what became The Silmarillion's mythology. Framed as tales told to a traveling mariner who reaches the Elvish isle of Tol Eressea, it covers the earliest accounts of the gods, the creation of the world, and the Elves' journey to Valinor, each followed by Christopher Tolkien's commentary.
