Synopsis
Continuing directly after the first novel, Kate learns the rest of the Clock family's story from an acquaintance of her aunt after the Borrowers are driven from their home in the old English house. Forced into the open countryside, Arrietty and her parents Pod and Homily must adapt to a far harsher existence, facing natural hazards, hunger and exposure with none of the shelter or salvaged comforts of their old home beneath the floorboards. They are aided by Spiller, a resourceful wild Borrower accustomed to surviving outdoors, and by Tom Goodenough, a boy living in a nearby cottage who proves sympathetic to their plight, even as the family is briefly captured by a Romani man who discovers them. Amid these hardships, the Clocks eventually cross paths with relatives they believed lost, deepening the sense of a wider, scattered Borrower community beyond their own household.
