Synopsis

The Brides of High Hill, fifth novella in Nghi Vo's Singing Hills Cycle, is set in the days leading up to a wedding at the grand estate of Doi Cao in the land of Ahn. Cleric Chih arrives at the invitation of the bride-to-be, Pham Nhung, a lively young woman who quickly takes a liking to the traveling cleric. The household is dominated by Lord Guo, a wealthy older man who has already outlived several previous wives, and overshadowed by his reclusive son, Guo Zhihao, who lives apart from the family under a curse that keeps him from speaking of whatever happened to his father's earlier brides. As the wedding preparations continue around them, Chih senses that something is deeply wrong beneath the estate's genteel surface and begins quietly investigating the household's secrets.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
