Synopsis

Mammoths at the Gates, fourth novella in the Singing Hills Cycle, brings cleric Chih back to Singing Hills Abbey after years of traveling, only to learn that their mentor, Cleric Thien, has died. Before Chih can properly grieve, Thien's granddaughters arrive riding mammoths and lay siege to the abbey gates, demanding the return of their grandfather's body. Amid the standoff, Chih reunites with an old friend, Ru, who now serves as acting divine of the abbey, and reconnects with their neixin companion, Almost Brilliant. As the abbey prepares a talking ceremony to honor Thien's memory, Chih makes the contested decision to invite the angry granddaughters inside so they can learn about their grandfather's work and life at Singing Hills.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
