Synopsis
Set in the year 1063 against the sweep of Deverrian history, the third novel follows Rhodry and Jill as they continue working together as silver-dagger mercenaries, while the narrative also traces how the silver dagger order itself came to exist. The centuries-old wizard Nevyn continues his long effort to atone for the sins of his youth, watching over the pair as their fates remain entwined with ancient magic and destiny. Two crises drive the plot: Jill is abducted by an unusual and dangerous nobleman, forcing Rhodry into a desperate search for her, and that search turns catastrophic when he is captured by pirates and enslaved on the distant island nation of Bardek.
