Synopsis
The fourth Deverry novel opens with the provinces in turmoil after Rhodry Maelwaedd, heir to the throne of Aberwyn, is captured and enslaved, mindwiped, in the distant land of Bardek. Jill, now growing in power as a dweomer student, and Rhodry's half-brother Salamander set out across the sea to find and rescue him, with Salamander initially serving as her tutor in magic during the journey. The immortal wizard Nevyn, meanwhile, senses a wider magical conspiracy stretching across the sea that seems deliberately designed to draw him into its trap, and he joins the rescue effort himself, wary of what the conspiracy may mean for the kingdom he has watched over for generations.
