Synopsis
Opening the second act of the Deverry Cycle, this novel finds the half-elven Lord Rhodry faking his own death and abandoning his old life in Deverry to live among his mother's Westfolk kin, forcing a pivotal reckoning with his heritage. His former lover Jill, now a powerful dweomermaster in her own right, sets out on a mystery of her own, investigating the significance of a mysterious rose ring connected to Rhodry that she cannot yet explain. The wizard Aderyn, whose own past among the Westfolk is explored in extended flashback, helps illuminate how deeply Rhodry's fate is bound to both his human ancestry and the elven Elcyion Lacar.
