Synopsis

The second novel of the Westlands act splits its attention between two protagonists. Jill travels to islands south of Bardek in search of a lost tribe of the Elcyion Lacar, the elven Westfolk, pursuing a mystery about their scattered people, while Rhodry, back on the mainland, disguises himself as an ordinary mercenary and takes on a young apprentice under his wing. In a parallel thread, Rhodry becomes drawn into helping a noblewoman named Carramaena, whose heart belongs to Daralanterial, the last remaining descendant of elven royalty, as she seeks a way to be reunited with him against the obstacles of rank and circumstance.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
