Synopsis
Ros is a young boy living on a drought-stricken farm in the broken land of the Change. He makes friends with Escher, an invisible companion who begins to teach him the magic of the Change, but his new knowledge soon puts him in real danger. His journey takes him away from the farm, and out in the wider world he has to decide for himself who is telling him the truth and who his real friends are. The first book of the Broken Land trilogy for younger readers was twice shortlisted for the Aurealis Awards.

- Internal chronology, within The Change: position 3 of 10: previous The Crooked Letter (2004) · next The Sky Warden and the Sun (2002)
