Synopsis
The Children of Green Knowe, published in 1954, is the first book in Lucy M. Boston's Green Knowe series. Toseland, known as Tolly, is a lonely boy sent to spend the Christmas holidays with his elderly great-grandmother, Mrs. Oldknow, at Green Knowe, an ancient moated manor house that has belonged to their family, the d'Aulneaux line, since the Norman Conquest. Left largely to his own company in the old house, Tolly gradually becomes aware of the presence of three children from the seventeenth century, an earlier Toseland nicknamed Toby, his brother Alexander, and their sister Linnet, whose spirits still seem to linger in the rooms and gardens. Rather than frightening him, these encounters, along with his great-grandmother's stories of the house's long history, give Tolly a growing sense of belonging to Green Knowe and its past.
