Synopsis

The Chimneys of Green Knowe, published in 1958, is the second book in Lucy M. Boston's Green Knowe series. Tolly returns to the old manor house for the Easter holidays, and while his great-grandmother Mrs. Oldknow mends a patchwork quilt, she tells him stories of earlier residents of Green Knowe, focusing on Susan Oldknow, a blind girl who lived there during the Regency era, and her close friendship with Jacob, a young page brought back from the West Indies by her father, Captain Oldknowe. Alongside these historical stories runs a present-day mystery involving jewels belonging to Susan's mother, Maria Oldknowe, which may have been stolen by the household's untrustworthy butler, Caxton. As Tolly listens to the tale of Susan and Jacob's bond, he becomes drawn into piecing together what really happened to the missing jewels.
